Brighter LEDs: Lamps hit 148 lm/W

LED supplier Cree says it has come up with a version of its high-brightness XLamp XP-G LEDs that are even brighter than before.

The cool white XLamp XP-G provides up to 148 lumens and 141 lumens/W (depending on the flux bin), while the outdoor white (4000K) XP-G LED delivers up to 139 lumens and 132 lumens/W and warm white (3000K) offers up to 122 lumens and 116 lumens/W, all at 350 mA.

The company also says that more than a million of these LEDs now illuminate a highway in China. The Shenzhen highway project uses more than 10,000 street lights featuring more than a million Cree XLamp XP-G and XP-E High Efficiency White (HEW) LEDs, says Cree. The project includes nearly 75 miles of roadways, with LED fixtures installed along one tunnel and four highways.

Kingsun Optoelectronic Co. Ltd. installed the lights on Jihe highway number G15, Nanguang highway number G9411, Longda highway number S318, Yanba highway as well as the Dameisha Tunnel. Kingsun installed 270-W and 300-W RL2R Apollo LED luminaires alongside the highways, including three traffic lanes and an emergency lane in each direction.

The installation was designed to average more than 20 lux, the Chinese national standard for main roads illumination. Kingsun anticipates a 60% reduction in energy consumption compared to the high-pressure sodium fixtures the LEDs replace.
